Benjamin Ineichen, MD, PhD, is Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) for and Head of the Medical Data Science at the Department of Clinical Research, University of Bern. He also leads a research group at the Center for Reproducible Science at the University of Zurich.
His work focuses on improving the efficiency and evidence base of drug development and clinical trial planning. Using data-driven methods, including systematic reviews, statistical modeling, automation, and natural language processing (NLP) with large language models (LLMs), he investigates why many promising drugs ultimately fail to achieve regulatory approval. His goal is to enhance evidence generation from both preclinical and clinical studies and support the implementation of modern data science methods in clinical trials.
His research career includes postdoctoral fellowships at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the U.S. and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. He earned his PhD in Neuroscience and Pharmacology from the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich and completed his medical studies at the University of Zurich, with additional certification from the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).
