Recap: Day and Week of Clinical Research 2024

The Day and Week of Clinical Research 2024, held from 26 to 28 November, celebrated innovation and collaboration in clinical research. On Tuesday, 26 November, the event began with Pecha Kucha presentations by junior researchers, giving short overviews of their projects. On Wednesday, 27 November, participants attended Library and Resources seminars that provided insights into research tools and methodologies. Engaging attendees with her Breakfast Talk on her career adventure, challenges and work-life balance, Prof. Dr. Asma Khalil shared her experiences on the last day whilst also encouraging everyone to pursue their passions. The day also featured a diverse poster walk and keynote lectures by Prof. Dr. Khalil and Prof. Dr. Vincenzo Mazzaferro, showcasing completed and ongoing research. The day concluded with a panel discussion on optimizing the use of patient data in clinical research and an award ceremony celebrating outstanding Pecha Kucha presentations, posters, and Junior Research Highlights. Quotes from participants: "Thank you for the great DCR Symposium, the perfect organization, and the generous prizes. It was so interesting to see all the studies and connect with other researchers—this is so valuable for us." Mark your calendars for the next Day and Week of Clinical Research, 2–4 December 2025!

Improving Reproducibility in Clinical Research Grant

The Department of Clinical Research was successful, together with DKF Basel, in acquiring a grant within the SCTOs Research on Research program, entitled “Improving Reproducibility in Clinical Research”. Reproducibility is an important, yet often ignored, cornerstone of good science. The project will seek “the improvement and further development of clinical research methods” by qualitatively and quantitatively describing the status quo among academic clinical researchers, which will enable us to design and roll out tools tailored to the field of academic clinical research. In addition, we will seek consensus among the CTUs in Switzerland as the specialists to guide other researchers, approaching institutional bodies as partners to encourage higher standards of reproducibility from academic clinical researchers.

CRF Scientific Excellence Top 10 (SET-10)

The Department of Clinical Research has been recognized as one of the 2024 CRF Scientific Excellence Top 10 (SET-10) at the TCT 2024 Symposium. This award underscores the work of our team, whose efforts drive significant advancements in interventional cardiovascular medicine. Being among the SET-10 reflects our ongoing commitment to research that elevates patient care and contributes to the evolution of cardiovascular treatments.

DO-IT Trial

The DO-IT trial (Study Title: Safety and Efficacy of Intravenous Thrombolysis in Patients With Ischemic Stroke and Recent Ingestion of Direct Oral Anticoagulants: The DOAC - International Thrombolysis (DO-IT) randomized controlled trial and registry), led by Dr. Thomas Meinel from the Neurology department at the Inselspital, received a 4'000 CHF grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation. This study aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of intravenous thrombolysis in patients experiencing an acute ischemic stroke and have recently ingested direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC), a frequent contraindication for this treatment. The DCR will support with Data Management, Statistics and Central Data Monitoring.
